ESPN Inc. 2005 - 2016

Overview

As part of the ESPN Technology Division, the Enterprise Software Engineering team was responsible for the design and development of custom web-based applications, B2B websites, and the ESPN intranet. Starting as a Multimedia engineer, I was responsible for designing and developing custom multimedia presentations and applications across the enterprise. Rising through the ranks, my position transitioned to User Experience Designer, where I continued my design and developing efforts towards user engagement, help systems, community management, and user interface design.

ESPN Intranet : In The Know

Based on an employee survey, ESPN needed to improve internal communication and knowledge sharing. I designed an intranet that took advantage of new social and collaboration concepts to improve communication and resource sharing across the enterprise. In The Know or ITK 1.0 was a production proto-type platform built in just under seven months.

The ITK 2.0 upgrade process I performed a platform evaluation process to move from our custom built, for an off the shelf solution. Several open source platforms, SharePoint, and Jive software were evaluated as the next version of ITK. The Jive platform had the closest feature set and roadmap that aligned with the business needs of the Internal Communications team. Migrating to the Jive platform, reduced the maintenance and support of ITK. This gave the team the freedom to focus on training community managers on improving team communications, document centralization, and increasing user engagement.

ITK 3.0 upgrade brought a two versions jump of the Jive platform. I designed and developed improved community templates, implemented a new modern design, and integrated mobile friendly access to the ITK platform.

Layout How-To Guide

Organization Chart : Enterprise App

The MicroSoft PowerPoint org chart tool was used by ESPN executives to support them in their reorganization efforts. To automate the org chart creation process, I built a custom application that dynamically pulled employee v-card data from the company SAP system. The ESPN Org Chart app dramatically streamlined executives re-organizing efforts. It was such a success, it was opened up to the ESPN staff through the ESPN Intranet. The ESPN Org Chart allowed employees to better understand the company division hierarchy, as well as find and learn about other employees.

I received a company achievement award, the Grand Slam. This award was presented by the President of ESPN, and included a thousand dollar bonus.
